Months after I first started open water swimming in Port Phillip Bay, I still found myself marvelling at the mass of water around me, and the metallic blues that reflected the morning rising sun. This is one of my favourite photos and features in my book about open water swimming, Immerse.

The choppy emerald waters envelope this lone swimmer making her way out to the 5-knot marker pole. The expanse of water shows just how little we are within its all-encompassing body. The ebb and flow of the waves rocks us, and knocks us, but we continue to dive out deep.

Ripples of deep emerald green water sweep across the bay. The sun is yet to rise, and we methodically stroke through the water, immersed in the dawn light and the lapping waters.
